WHAT IS POROSITY?
Porosity is the hair's ability to absorb and retain water and water-soluble hair products. This refers to HOW your hair absorbs moisture and at what level it is absorbed. There are three different porosity levels. Knowing your porosity level is important because this can affect which product you should use on your hair, and how your hair reacts to the products.
Porosity Test
-
Low Porosity
Hair characteristics include dry hair, and in some cases, it’s hard to keep this hair texture wet, because water can bead up and roll right off the strand. Hair rarely retains moisture once it's absorbed. Product can sit on top of hair strands rather than absorbing into it. Hair is typically prone to product build up. Products that are too heavy like the incorrect oils or butter, can weigh hair down. Tip: Warm strands to aid in moisture absorption. Warm a bottle of HHB's "Moisturizing Spray" by placing it in a warm bowl of water for a few minutes prior to spritzing hair, or apply after steam from a warm/hot shower.
-
Medium Porosity
Hair characteristics include good moisture retention for a long period of time. Hair takes color well and holds styles for a good length of time. Products tend to absorb into hair strands rather than building up on top. Doesn't take a long time to dry hair. Tip: Do not over moisturize as this can lead to product build-up.
-
High Porosity
Hair characteristics include frizzy and dry hair, that tends to break easily. Absorbs too much moisture and products quickly but in most cases, it doesn't stay moisturized long. Tip: Be sure to seal in your moisture with HHB's "High Porosity - Seal" to aid in moisture retention.
